The Big Why
Why the hell am I at the gym when I have a hundred other things I should be doing? Why am I drinking so much water when all it does is make me pee? Why should I only have one cookie, when others around me are eating an entire plateful? Sitting in silence sounds like a total bore, why would I do that?
These and other “why” questions might make their way into your head quite a bit as you start a new health journey. Sometimes these thoughts can derail you and send you back into old habits that aren’t beneficial. One way to combat these voices in your head is to have an answer for them, to have your BIG WHY ready whenever the thought surfaces. This doesn’t mean your why will always win, but it will many times and it certainly can help you to stay focused and help to get you back on track quicker when you do have those off days.
Creating your “why” doesn't have to be daunting. Make a list of the habits you’d like to create and then prioritize the ones that are most beneficial to you and your health. Once you decide on the one or two that you would like to begin with, write down your why. Meaning, write down why you want to create them as a habit. Why does it matter? Why is it important in your life? How is it going to benefit you and your health? What do you have to gain from starting the habit? If you have a “why” connected to your habits, it makes it easier to implement and stick with, especially on the days when you feel like skipping out. You can also do this same exercise for the habits you’d like to break. Ask yourself, why do I continue this habit that doesn't serve me? This will then lead you to dig deeper and uncover why these “bad” habits are sticking around.
Having a “why” helps me to this day and I’m confident that having your own “why” for getting healthy can help you as well! Remember to keep it simple and celebrate your wins!!
